Mammillaria Heyderi var. Hemispherica
Mammillaria cacti are among the most popular to cacti collectors. This genus of globular cacti is among the largest, with 171 species on record. The names Nipple Cactus and Pincushion Cactus are attributed to a number of different species within the genus. The name "mammillaria” has the same root as mammary, meaning breast. The popularity of mammillaria cacti can be attributed to the large selection of specimens to collect within the genus, the aesthetics of the individual species and the fact that they tend to be easy to cultivate. Mammillaria heyderi is a short, flat-topped species. In the winters, it is known to recede, sometimes even dropping below the soil level. It is typically found in limestone soils on dry hillsides in middle to low elevations of the Chihuahuan Desert. This durable species is reported to be hardy down to 10 degrees Fahrenheit. This species has a special interest for collectors of sacred cacti and entheobotanical plants because there are reports that it played a part in ritual ceremonies performed by Tarahumara shamans. Specimens are also sometimes sold as folk medicine in Mexico.
